Original Yoshitsuya (1822 - 1866) Japanese Woodblock Print
Minamoto no Yorimitsu and Hakamadare, 1858

Comments - An incredible scene by Yoshitsuya illustrating the clash between Minamoto no Yorimitsu and Hakamadare from the epic tale “The Taiheiki.” While leading his retainers through Yakeyama Pass, the valiant warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu encounters a giant serpent conjured up by magician Hakamadare Yasumasa, who sits calmly in a tree at right. The amazing image of the serpent coiling through the scene and threatening to strike, with mouth open and tongue flashing, creates a dramatic, captivating effect. Notice the black dog at left running along the snake towards Hakamadare. Considered Yoshitsuya’s masterwork, this fantastic subject is a very rare find. A fantastic depiction of this legendary tale, beautifully detailed and richly colored.
